MEET JOE
Joe Bird was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and lived there until the age of 7 when his family moved not too far outside Nashville, Tennessee. While there, he earned a bachelor's degree in Electronic Media Communications from the Mass Media School of Middle Tennessee State University. He then transferred to Mississippi State University to earn his Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology. In 2013, he moved to Evansville, Indiana, where he works for WEHT & WTVW Eyewitness News as a morning news anchor and meteorologist.
Believe it or not, the one thing that scared Joe the most as a kid was storms! With the clap of thunder, he'd run to his bedroom and hide in the closet under a blanket until the storm passed. Now, he wants to be outside during a storm and would love to chase tornadoes. Joe has always loved the idea of cooking but never pursued it until he became friends with barbecue world-renowned Pitmaster Jim Johnson. For almost 4 years, Jim has taught Joe the ropes of cooking. Jim does not claim to be a chef and is known for saying he just wants to help people cook better than their neighbor! Jim also amazes people with the amount of flavor in his dishes with mostly only using 5 ingredients or less!
Due to restaurants shutting down in-house customers due to COVID-19, Joe, being the "foodie" of his TV station for 8 years, started a cooking segment with the help of Jim. The goal was to bring families together in the kitchen to cook a meal during social distancing. The segment gained such popularity that it continues on air to this day! Viewers often write Joe saying they love his recipes and even suggest he open a restaurant or create a cookbook. Now Joe often teases that he's teaching Jim the ropes of cooking!
For fun, Joe loves to travel as much as he can, with his favorite form being cruises! In the meantime, he spends time playing on the floor with his 10-pound Yorkie, Zoey, tugging his rope or throwing her squeaky toys — and of course cooking for others!
